PODCAST 2

Now, I am in the mass communications building and my external hard drive will not turn on! It worked at the library on Sunday and it works on my computer (a mac and a pc)

But alas I am supposed to be writing about my experience creating this video. The creation of this video was much more simple, having the last experience to recall on and the ability to prepare created a much more efficient filming experience. I was prepared with my discussion points and ready to create a different viewing experience for you all. I took the advice of my group and positioned myself off-center of the screen and instead of speaking to the screen I spoke to the listener just off camera.
For this podcast we had a new location, the Coffee Haus, this location had its ups and downs. The filming took place outside so I apologize for the background noise and the other group that joined us in our filming, uninvited I might add.

This video took around an hour to shoot and then it was on to editing. The editing portion of this was the fun part last time, really it was! I was actually excited about implementing some of the suggestions from last time: keeping my transitions parallel, i.e., music on all or none, same colors, not as many effects, etc. I was just so excited to be playing with ALL of the options I let it get crazy! So, I head to the library with my friends and we attempt to upload our videos from the tape to the computer--- apparently the camera was not compatible with the macs in the library so after about 30 minutes of uploading we finally borrowed a camera from the library. The video is uploaded and the VERSION of iMovie is not the same as the version in the MCOM lab. It was a sad time at the library.

So, the editing begins and the problems began to stack up-- after three hours I had a 3.38 minute podcast and I was in the home stretch. I log in to YouTube and begin uploading- somehow between the exported file and the file on YouTube the audio and picture completely disengaged and now I am left with the horrible video above.

I really enjoy technology, but these experiences are not improving- I have HIGH hopes for the third podcast.

Enjoy.

*Apparently my My Book has attitude, it will work on EVERY computer unless they are in the MCOM lab. :(

Ashley -
I'm so sorry that your My Book never seems to work. You obviously did not get to edit this and the people sitting next to you are obviously RUDE!
Other than the obvious background volume concerns I would suggest that you slow down just a bit as you talk. Some parts are really fast and its hard to understand (that could just be because of the background noise though).
I think that your content was problably really good and I wish you would have been able to edit. Better luck with podcast #3 and there will definately be taping in a quite place!

Ashley--

I think your podcast was good. Obviously, the background noise was a problem, but I liked how you positioned yourself in the shot. I also liked how naturally and easily you talked about your theories. I saw you glancing at your notes a few times, but that's understandable.

My suggestions for improving your podcast would be to include title slides for the beginning of your podcast (for the intro and two-step flow). I saw that you had some editing glitches and YouTube issues, so maybe that's why they didn't show up. Over the last 30 seconds or so of the video, the sound completely cut out and then faded down. Again, I imagine the YouTube problem didn't help.

I'm glad to see that your My Book is up and running and/or been replaced. Mine is in a file cabinet drawer, for what it's worth.

Good luck on the last two podcasts, and sorry this comment was so late...I might not be good at working an external hard drive, but I am amazing at procrastinating. :)

Ashley,
I'm sorry that you've had such a crappy experience thus far with your video editing. External hard drives can be aweful to deal with.

I think you did a really good job of handling the pressure of your electronic problems. The background noise is an issue, but it doesn't distract me too much once I get used to it. I really liked your framing and lighting. I thought you did a good job of using the outside to your advantage in where you positioned yourself in relation to the camera.

You seemed very fluid in talking about your theories so it was easy to follow. Overall, I think you did a really great job!
