The video that was ALMOST lost...

This was a less than fantastic experience all around. First, the taping of the 'B' roll and 3 to 5 minutes of my speech took much longer than expected. We quickly realized this process was going to be much more time consuming and difficult than originally expected. After many scripts, which was not originally planned, and a Saturday afternoon with B & J I have successfully recorded 5 or so minutes for this first podcast. I come to class with my 'My Book' external hard drive, my video tape, and the best of intentions. After three hours of editing (and learning to edit) I have created something that resembles a podcast with titles, music and my attempt at humor. I have been saving as I work but, as I go to save the final version of my first podcast iMovie freezes and a 'force quit' is required. At this point I think I have lost three hours of intensive labor on my project, I leave the school dejected ready to spend the following afternoon in the basement re-editing my podcast. Friday I open the file that has been saved on my hard drive and something turns out my way!! The podcast is there and one of my saves during editing has left me with about an hour of editing. I complete the podcast and think 'this is great' only to attempt to turn it in this week and find out my Western Digital My Book will not turn on. This hard drive has been out of the box two times since it was purchased January 15th or so.
This experience was not the best, but learning to film and figuring out the editing process was very interesting. I hope in my next 2 podcasts I will have better footage, more interesting, and that I will improve my editing skills.

The podcast was saved on a Mac in the podcasting suite, so I do have a video for your enjoyment. But as you can imagine this has been one of the less fabulous experiences I have had with technology.

I'm so thrilled that your podcast was not completely lost! You did a fabulous job for being so "unfamiliar" with the technology. I thoroughly enjoyed the outtakes and look forward to more of it. As a suggestion for your next podcast - perhaps you could be a little more light-hearted during the monologue portions. There were some parts where you were very serious. Not a big deal though. You did great and I can't wait to see what you come up with next. Congratulations on a job well done!

Ashley--

I thought your podcast was very put together. Hopefully, the next two will go toether without as much stress and irritation. I liked how you broke up your monologue with the title slides. I think it helped to organize your ideas and the podcast. I noticed that some of the title slides were accompanied by music (or you talking),but some weren't. I like music, and I think the music you chose was fun and lighthearted (and from My Boys, I think...and great show). If you included it with all of your title slides, I think it would have streamlined your podcast a little bit more. I also liked that you wrote out your research questions and matched them to your audio. Doing so helped make your questions easier to follow and understand. Not that they weren't easy to follow and understand...I just like to read stuff too. Your outtakes were also hysterical and a neat way to end your podcast. Overall, I like your podcast, and your research/proposal topic. I'm looking forward to your future podcasts. And...again, I hope that won't be as traumatic as making the first one. :)

Ashley,
I really enjoyed your first podcast. You did good job!!! It was a good informative podcast. I did not know exactly about the foundation for a better life. Your final paper on theory relevancy with new technology shows how theory might be applied in the new media. I think it is significant to look at the current phenomenon based on theoretical background. I’d like to hear why and how did you choose those two theories.
On the process of producing podcast, I have similar experience as yours. I thought I export the whole video and save it. However, next day, it wasn’t. Technology sometimes sucks and drives me crazy. Anyway, glad to hear that yours were saved properly.
On the last video, forbidden footage is one of my favorite parts of your podcast. It also makes me laugh because it reminds me what I’ve done on my podcast:)

The force quit option ALWAYS sucks. It's a bummer that you had to experience that on your first project. For all your problems, your podcast was really good!

I think you could afford to RELAX a little when you're going through the script. You are not a high strung person, so why does your podcast portray you that way? Slow down your pace a little and you'll be fine. That being said, being in front of the camera sucks, and it can make you more nervous than you thought possible, so I can understand the quick pace.

Your framing was good, but you might try to move yourself onto a third so that you are not smack in the middle of the frame. Your lighting and audio were both good. Your titles were good, and to be honest I have no idea how to work with the titles in iMovie, so you are a step up from me.

Overall, it was a great first attempt, and hopefully you won't have the same issues with the next two podcasts.

Ashley, you might move a bit to the right so that you are on one of the thirds. Avoid red on black. You would be better off keeping the title on screen rather than scrolling up, it will make it easier to read. Be careful where you cut the video, you lose a bit of audio around title 4 or so. Stay consistent with your titling. If you are not using audio on all of them, a single title with audio may prepare the user for the video to end. The “star wars” style titling is interesting, however, I think you would have been better off keeping something like that short. Keep in mind that you are shooting for a small screen. Sounds like you learned a lot putting together the first video. I look forward to next ones.
